What’s Mulch?

Gardening isn’t a precise science. One week the weather is ideal and the plants grow in great conditions. Other weeks it may appear that your garden is cursed. Help the garden and lawn keep moisture and withstand the summer heat with mulch.

Mulch is a cover on the ground in and round the plants. It generally is composed of miniscule pieces of wood but other material may be employed as mulch. Newspapers, card and even grass clippings can be employed as mulch. Mulch helps to keep moisture in the ground near the plants. Correct mulching can help in reducing the necessity for synthetic watering. It also helps keep the ground round the plant cooler than the air surrounding the plant.

This will help to fend off intense heat in a number of cases. Mulch acts as an obstruction against weeds too. Weeds just like any plant fight for other plants for space, food and water. Putting the mulch round the desired plant helps ward off undesired plants. It cuts the weeds off from any source of daylight, an obligatory ingredient for plant expansion and food.

Concepts for Mulch

Besides the wood mulch there are several other materials that may be used as mulch. Here’s a list of some of those concepts. Rocks. The little pebbles that are used for aquariums make good mulch. But since they can hinder the root expansion of some plants, they are not likely to make good mulch in the long term. They are going to have to be removed every year if the soil is to be used over the following year. Heavier card works best as it takes more time to break down. Card will finally break down and it’s just brief mulch. But card adds to the nutriments in the soil. Grass clippings. After the grass has been cut, use grass clippings in the garden areas as mulch. Grass clippings are perfect “emergency” mulch. When no other mulch can be discovered or purchased, grass clippings may be employed in a pinch. They are not as heavy though and will suffice when a fast non permanent solution is required.

Papers are easy to tear into the shapes wanted to cover the area to be mulched. Pine needles are wonderful mulch particularly for acid-loving veg and garden plants like strawberries, blueberries and potatoes. When the pine needles break down, then they make the soil more acidic. Remember that placing too many pine needles in one area can make the soil extraordinarily acidic. Too much acid and the plants will not prosper. Try adding mulch to the garden to extend moisture retention, help chill the ground in warmer areas and can add beauty to the garden area.
